Nats Bench Harper For 'Lack Of Effort'

Aug 31, 2014 4:45 PM

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was benched for lack of effort in Saturday's loss to the Cardinals, according to an ESPN.com report.

Manager Matt Williams apparently was not happy with Harper's effort running to first base during a groundout in the sixth inning.

When asked about the incident after the game, Williams attributed Harper's "inability to run 90 feet" as the reason for the benching.

"Lack of hustle. That's why he came out of the game,'' Williams said. "He and I made an agreement, this team made an agreement, that when we play the game, that we hustle at all times.''

Farrell Becomes First Manager Ejected Over Replay Dispute

Aug 31, 2014 4:46 PM

MLB's replay system was designed to mitigate the human element in umpiring decisions. Instead, the human element is surfacing in a different form, Red Sox manager John Farrell said Sunday night.

"It's hard to have any faith in the system,'' Farrell said after Boston's 3-2 loss to the Yankees.

Farrell became the first manager to be ejected for disputing a play that was reviewed on replay after umpires reversed their call on what would have been an inning-ending double play in the fourth inning. Once the call was reversed, the Yankees were credited with a run that would not have counted had the original call stood.

That run ultimately proved to be the margin of victory for the Yankees.
